Sally McCreedy
Official Ambassador for the 2008 Pacific School Games
Profile
Although, not a previous PSG participant, Sally McCreedy embodies the sporting spirit and athletic prowess necessary to rise through the ranks of school sport to compete in numerous international competitions in her chosen sport – softball.
“Unfortunately softball is not one of the sports in the PSG but the opportunities I had though school sport were invaluable. I was introduced to softball (t-ball) at Downer Primary School and quickly developed a passion for team sport and competing. I first tasted representative honours for ACT playing softball in the Primary School Sports Competition. This gave me a great desire to achieve the highest level I could for my sport. Playing many sports at school during my formative years certainly laid the foundation for my future athletic career.” Ironically, she also represented the ACT in Hockey and Athletics - both sports in the 2008 PSG - as a school student.
Twice an Olympic bronze medal winner – in 1996 and 2000 – Sally lists “being named in the Sydney 2000 Olympic team” as one of her career highlights as well as being selected in her very first Australian Softball Team in 1985. Yet she has a long list of other awards to her credit including two times Best Batter of the Australian Championships (97, 98), ACT Sportstar of the Year Award finalist (93, 95) and becoming a Life Member of the ACT Softball Association – to name just a few.
To cap it off, in 2006 she received an Order of Australia Medal for her services to softball as a player and a coach.
And despite not having had the chance to compete against all those countries in one shot at a Pacific School Games, Sally has competed internationally at just about as many countries including Canada, Japan, Holland, China, New Zealand, Italy and several cities throughout the U.S., as well as most Australian capital cities. This impressive list of Australian representations include competing in five world championships – in 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, and 2002 – equalling the world record for appearances at World Championships.
A Canberra local from a very early age. Sally received an Australian Institute of Sport Scholarship (1993 – 2002) and also received an ACT Academy of Sport scholarship (1995 – 2001). Sally retired from her international softball career in 2002 but is extremely busy these days as a mother to her two pre-school aged children and in part-time administration work while still playing top grade softball and hockey in Canberra.
