Adam Pine OAM
Official Ambassador for the 2008 Pacific School Games
Profile
As a two time competitor in the Pacific School Games (Sydney 1988 and Darwin 1992) it is easy to see why Adam cannot say enough about the positive effect that competing in two PSGs has had on his sporting career - but Adam is also clear that it was a significant life experience for him.
“The closing ceremony at Sydney in 1988 is etched in my mind. I can still remember marching with my friends and competitors on the dark wet streets of Sydney with flashing beacons attached to our arms – it is something I will never forget. And although it is 20 years since I competed in Sydney, I am still in contact with friends from that team. I have also become close friends with the family that billeted me in Darwin during the 1992 PSG.”
Since then Adam’s sporting career has continued to reach heights that include being the first swimmer to represent Australia at four consecutive Commonwealth Games (94, 98, 2002, and 2006). He has won Gold and Silver medals at two Olympics, and five medals, including two Gold, at four Commonwealth Games.
Adam had the special honour of reading the Athlete’s Oath at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne. He was also been awarded an Order of Australia medal in 2001 for his achievements in swimming.
Adam is still training and competing these days (he recently competed at a record 5th world championship) which he fits into a busy schedule that includes a full-time position as Sport Development Manager at Swimming Australia and spending time with his family. He is also busy training for the 2008 Beijing Olympics which he hopes to compete in.
Adam advises aspiring young athletes that setting goals and planning to achieve them is important but that believing in yourself is most important. “It is improbable that you will ever achieve what your mind perceives as impossible”. He extends his congratulations to all young athletes who are fortunate enough to compete in a PSG – “It is a great experience”.
