Volunteer Sport Technical Officials Information
The 2008 Pacific School Games actively encourages participating States, Territories and Countries to include sport officials as part of their team. Opportunities also exist for appropriately qualified referees, umpires and technical officials to be involved in the Pacific School Games across all sports.
Basketball
Opportunities exist for officials in the following areas:
- Referees
Minimum Level 1 qualification is required to referee in the 12 years and under competition.
Minimum Level 2 qualification is required to referee in the 18 years and under competition.
- Score Table Officials
Must have completed an accredited Basketball Score Table Officials Course.
- Statistician
Must have completed an accredited Basketball Statisticians Course.
Student Officials
As per current School Sport Australia practice, each participating state/territory team in the 2008 Pacific School Games Basketball should bring a suitably qualified student referee to officiate in the competition.
A student referee should be selected for each team representing that state or territory e.g. if teams have been entered in the 12 years & under boys, the 12 years and under girls, the 18 years & under boys and the 18 years & under girls competitions, then a minimum of four student referees should be sent.
Student officials will not be required to pay the 2008 PSG competitor levy.
International teams are encouraged to bring suitably qualified referees as part of their team.
Hockey
Opportunities exist for officials in the following areas:
- Umpires
- Technical Officials
Minimum Level 1 qualification (or equivalent) is required to umpire in both the 12 years and under and the 16 years and under competitions.
Completion of an accredited Hockey Technical Official's Course or previous practical experience on a technical bench is preferred.
Student Officials
As per current School Sport Australia practice, each participating state/territory team in the 2008 Pacific School Games Hockey should bring a suitably qualified student umpire to officiate in the competition. A student umpire should be selected for each team representing that state or territory e.g. if teams have been entered in the 12 years & under boys, the 12 years and under girls, the 16 years & under boys and the 16 years & under girls competitions then a minimum of four student umpires should be sent.
Student officials will not be required to pay the 2008 PSG competitor levy.

Diving
Opportunities exist for officials in the following areas:
- Judging
- Recording Table
National Age Level qualification is preferred.
Practical competition experience in Recording Table work is preferred.
Track & Field
Opportunities exist for officials in the following areas:
- Technical Officials
- General Volunteers
Minimum Level ‘C’ qualification is required to officiate as a Track & Field Technical Official.
A number of opportunities exist for people who would like to be involved in the Track & Field competition as an official but who do not hold the required minimum qualification. Practical on-field experience in Track & Field competitions is preferred e.g. school athletics carnivals or Little Athletics.
Swimming
Opportunities exist for officials in the following areas:
- Technical Officials
- General Volunteers
Minimum Level 1 accreditation is required to officiate as a Swimming Technical Official.
Referee and Starter positions require a minimum Level 2 accreditation.
A number of opportunities exist for people who would like to be involved in the Swimming competition as an official but who do not hold the required minimum accreditation. Practical on pool deck experience in swimming competition is preferred e.g. school swimming carnivals or inter-club competitions.
